Hi there,

Today is the first of two Public Media Giving Days, a time to celebrate what public and independent media gives to you by giving back. If you think Democracy Now!’s reporting is a critical line of defense against war, climate catastrophe and authoritarianism, please make your donation of $10 or more right now. In honor of Public Media Giving Days, a generous donor will TRIPLE your donation, which means it’ll go 3x as far to support our independent journalism. Democracy Now! is funded by you, and that’s why we’re counting on your donation to keep us going strong. Please give today. Every dollar makes a difference—in fact, gets tripled! Thank you so much.

Acclaimed Fashion Designer Locks Herself in Bird Cage to Protest Jailing of Julian Assange

HeadlineJul 22, 2020

In London, the acclaimed fashion designer Vivienne Westwood locked herself inside a giant yellow bird cage outside a London court Tuesday to protest the ongoing jailing of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and his possible extradition to the United States.

Vivienne Westwood: “I am Julian Assange. I am the canary in the cage. He has been trapped by a big net, taken out of the sun and shoved in a cage. And the problem is, they want to send him to America for a sentence of 175 years and stick him in a concrete block for a jail. And this could happen to every journalist.”
