Uganda Passes Bill Criminalizing Identifying as LGBTQ, Imposing Death Penalty in Some Cases

HeadlineMar 22, 2023

Uganda’s Parliament has passed another sweeping bill criminalizing LGBTQ people, allowing for the death sentence in certain cases. The new law appears to be the first to outlaw even identifying as LGBTQ, carrying a penalty of up to 20 years in prison. It also targets HIV-positive people who engage in same-sex relations with the death penalty, bans the so-called promotion of homosexuality, and declares all same-sex conduct as nonconsensual.
