No company will report them missing. No family members will tape their photographs on buildings, in subways, or inhospital entrances in the desperate hope that someone will find them. They will likely not be counted in the finaltally of those who were killed in the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
They are the undocumented immigrants who worked as vendors, delivery men, cleaners, and in other low-wage jobs. Theirfamilies and friends are too afraid of immigration officials to come forward. Very few families of victims havereceived any of the millions of dollars of donations raised to help those affected by the tragedy.
Livelihoods have also been lost. The Asociacion Tepeyac de New York, has tallied some 700 mostly undocumented peopleleft jobless because their jobs are behind Ground Zero barricades downtown. Most undocumented workers here were thesole support of an entire family back home.
