Hi there,

Can you donate $10 per month to support Democracy Now!’s independent journalism all year long? Since our very first broadcast in 1996, we’ve refused to take government or corporate funding, because nothing is more important to us than our editorial independence—especially in this unprecedented election year. When Democracy Now! covers war and peace or the climate crisis, we’re not brought to you by the weapons manufacturers or the oil, gas, coal or nuclear companies. Our journalism is powered by YOU. But that means we can’t do our work without your support. Right now, a generous donor will TRIPLE your gift, which means your $10 donation this month will be worth $30 to Democracy Now! Please do your part right now. We’re all in this together. Thank you so much.

Private Contractors Unveil New Ammunition in Iraq

HeadlineDec 05, 2003

The Army Times is reporting that private military contractors have used in at least one instance a controversial new form of firepower in Iraq that is still barred for use by the military The armor-piercing bullet can be fired from a gun but it has far more power than any conventional gun ammunition. A contractor recently fired a shot at the buttocks of an Iraqi man from a distance of 100 yards. According to the contractor “It entered his butt and completely destroyed everything in the lower left section of his stomach … everything was torn apart.” Since the ammunition is still not allowed by the military, the contractor would have been court martial if he were enlisted. But no rules appear to apply for military contractors.
