Hi there,

It is the job of the press to cover power, not cover for power—to hold those in power accountable by documenting what's happening on the ground and amplifying voices at the grassroots. In this critical moment, as attacks on the media escalate, we must continue to cover crackdowns on dissent, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, public health and academic freedom. Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations made today will be DOUBLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $30. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

US Military Police Raid Iraqi Detention Centre After Sovereignty “Handover”

HeadlineJul 01, 2004

The Guardian of London is reporting that on the day after the so-called handover of power in Iraq, the U.S. military police raided a detention center being operated by the Iraqi ministry of the interior in Baghdad. At one point, the U.S. threatened to free all of the Iraqi prisoners. The incident raised new questions as to how much sovereignty the new Iraqi government actually has. The U.S. said they carried out the raid because they had received reports that Iraqi interrogators were physically abusing the detainees. The 150 prisoners had all been picked up in what was described as the first Iraqi-led anti-crime and anti-terrorism operation.
