John Bolton — President Bush’s nominee to be the country’s ambassador to the United Nations — was accused Tuesday of repeatedly abusing his power, intimidating intelligence analysts, and damaging the integrity of the State Department. The accusations came from Carl Ford, the State Department’s former director of intelligence and research. Ford told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Bolton was a “kiss-up, kick-down sort of guy” who “abuses his authority with little people.” Ford charged that in 2002, Bolton directed an abusive tirade at analyst Christian Westermann for challenging Bolton’s assertion that Cuba was developing biological and chemical weapons. Bolton later tried to have Westermann fired.
