Hi there,

This month, Democracy Now! marks 29 years of fearless independent journalism. Presidents have come, gone and come back again, but Democracy Now! remains, playing the same critical role in our democracy: shining a spotlight on corporate and government abuses of power and raising up the voices of scholars, advocates, scientists, activists, artists and ordinary people working for a more peaceful and just world. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today in honor of our 29th anniversary. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

GOPers: Bank Spy Reports Hurt National Security

HeadlineJun 26, 2006

The Bush administration and leading Republicans are lashing out at the New York Times and other media outlets for their reports on the government’s secret monitoring of international bank transactions without court-approval.

  • US Treasury Secretary John Snow: “This is a great disappointment, I’ve got to say that, this is regrettable. We try to dissuade people from running these stories, as you know. What the disclosures do is fundamentally degrade, undermine and degrade an important source of information, make that information less useful, and again let me say that the only beneficiaries of that are the terrorists; it only helps the terrorists, so it’s very regrettable.”
