Hi there,

As the future of democracy in the United States hangs in the balance, the need for courageous independent media is more important than ever. Our reporting centers the voices of people routinely excluded from corporate and government-run media, such as those raising deep questions about war and peace, demanding an end to our global reliance on fossil fuels. Because we are audience-supported, we need your help today. Can you donate $15 to Democracy Now! today to support independent media? From now until Giving Tuesday, a group of generous donors will TRIPLE your gift, which means your $15 donation is worth $45. Please help us air in-depth, substantive coverage of the outcome of the election and what it means for our collective future. Thank you so much! Every dollar makes a difference.

Lebanon Says Death Toll Could Reach 600

HeadlineJul 28, 2006

The Lebanese government says the death toll in the two weeks of Israeli bombing could be as high 600. Earlier today, at least eleven Lebanese were killed in dozens of Israeli strikes on south Lebanon. The news comes as Israel has announced a massive call-up of up to 30,000 reserve troops. Israeli military radio told south Lebanese Thursday that Israeli forces “will totally destroy any village from which missiles are fired toward Israel.” Earlier this morning we reached independent journalist Dahr Jamail in Beirut.

  • Independent Journalist Dahr Jamail: “The official death toll [of 400] is far too low. I actually called down to a hospital in Sidon yesterday and spoke with a doctor there and he said that he felt that the number should be at least adding 250 to that total at a minimum and likely double. The doctor told me that they are receiving countless people in that hospital alone but the problem was that just like here in South Beirut there are so many buildings that have been so utterly demolished with families inside that there is no way to get the bodies.”
