Immigrant rights groups are accusing the Bush administration of holding immigrant families in prison-like conditions at two detention centers in Pennsylvania and Texas. In a report set for release today, the Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children and the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service say immigrant children have been separated from their parents and sometimes denied proper medical care, food and education. The report follows a federal inspection last month at five of the nation’s detention centers. Investigators found the centers failed to provide timely and responsive healthcare and fell short of other government standards.
