Pakistani forces have regained control of a naval base in the city of Karachi after a deadly attack by armed militants. At least a dozen military personnel were killed and 14 wounded when gunmen overran the PNS Mehran building late Sunday night. The fighters also blew up a maritime patrol aircraft provided to the Pakistanis by the United States. The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, calling it revenge for the death of Osama bin Laden. The Mehran base is considered one of Pakistan’s most heavily guarded. It is located just 15 miles from Pakistan’s largest base, which is believed to be a depot for nuclear weapons. In a visit to the CIA this weekend, President Obama praised the intelligence work that led to bin Laden’s death.
President Obama: “Make no mistake, this is not over, because we not only took out the symbol and operational leader of al-Qaeda, we walked off with his files—the largest treasure trove of intelligence ever seized from a terrorist leader. Many of you now are working around the clock. You didn’t have much time to celebrate. We’ve got to analyze and evaluate and exploit this mountain of intelligence. So, today, every terrorist in the al-Qaeda network should be watching their back, because we’re going to review every video, we are going to examine every photo.”
