The purported aim is to help fight al-Qaeda in Iraq and prevent a spillover from Syria’s internal conflict. The CIA’s role in the Middle East appears to be expanding overall. The agency is operating a drone base in Saudi Arabia and training Syrian rebels in Jordan.
