A Royal Navy whistleblower who exposed security problems at Britain’s Trident nuclear base in Scotland is in naval police custody after about a week on the run. In an 18-page report published by WikiLeaks, Able Seaman William McNeilly wrote: “We are so close to a nuclear disaster it is shocking, and yet everybody is accepting the risk to the public.” McNeilly describes a fire on board a submarine, the use of a missile compartment as a gym, an alleged coverup of a submarine collision and lax security which makes it “harder to get into most nightclubs” than into restricted areas of the nuclear base. British authorities have said they will not prosecute McNeilly under the Official Secrets Act, a move critics have said is aimed at averting further scrutiny of his revelations.
