Hi there,

This month, Democracy Now! marks 29 years of fearless independent journalism. Presidents have come, gone and come back again, but Democracy Now! remains, playing the same critical role in our democracy: shining a spotlight on corporate and government abuses of power and raising up the voices of scholars, advocates, scientists, activists, artists and ordinary people working for a more peaceful and just world. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today in honor of our 29th anniversary. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Donald Trump Compares Immigration to “Suicide”

HeadlineJul 25, 2016

Meanwhile, Trump also told Chuck Todd that he expanded his call for a ban on immigration during his speech at the RNC Thursday.

Chuck Todd: “This feels like a slight rollback.”

Donald Trump: “I don’t think I’d pull back.”

Chuck Todd: “Should we interpret that as that?”

Donald Trump: “I don’t think so.”

Chuck Todd: “OK.”

Donald Trump: “I actually don’t think it’s a pullback. In fact, you could say it’s an expansion. I’m looking now at territories. People were so upset when I used the word 'Muslim.' Oh, you can’t use the word 'Muslim.' Remember this. And I’m OK with that, because I’m talking territory instead of Muslim. But just remember this: Our Constitution is great. But it doesn’t necessarily give us the right to commit suicide, OK? Now, we have a religious—you know, everybody wants to be protected. And that’s great, and that’s the wonderful part of our Constitution. I view it differently. Why are we committing suicide?”
