In Colombia, longtime land defender and community leader Temístocles Machado has been assassinated in the port city Buenaventura. Known to the community as Temis, he helped lead the massive, three-week-long civic strike in the Afro-Colombian city this past summer, which was protesting widespread violence in the region and a lack of basic services, such as clean water.
