He said the U.S. is committed to Iraqi sovereignty, following backlash over Trump’s comments earlier this month that he would keep U.S. troops in Iraq to “watch Iran.” Following a meeting with Shanahan, Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi reiterated that the U.S. mission in Iraq must be limited to helping combat terrorism.
