In California, U.S. Navy SEAL Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher was acquitted of murder Tuesday after a jury found him not guilty on all charges except for the least serious charge of taking a photo over the dead body of a captive teenage combatant in Iraq. Gallagher was accused of multiple war crimes, including shooting two Iraqi civilians and fatally stabbing the captive teenager in the neck. The verdict came despite several of his fellow Navy SEALs testifying as witnesses to the alleged murder. During the trial, a Navy SEAL medic testified that he—not Gallagher—was actually responsible for killing the teenager, throwing the prosecution’s case into disarray. The medic said he asphyxiated the victim as a “mercy killing” after Gallagher stabbed him, though prosecutors say the claim was fabricated to protect Gallagher. Gallagher is set to be sentenced today and faces up to four months behind bars, though his lawyer says he will not return to prison since he has already spent more than four months in pretrial detention.
