Hi there,

With authoritarianism sharply on the rise and so much at risk—including our most basic rights—we're counting on our audience like never before to support our work and help us hold governments and corporations to account. Right now, less than 1% of people who count on Democracy Now!'s news, donate to support our work. If even 1% of our global audience made a donation of any amount today, it would cover our costs for 2025.Thanks to a group of generous donors, all donations made today will be TRIPLED, which means your $15 gift is worth $45. With your contribution, we can continue to go to where the silence is, to bring you the voices of the silenced majority. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Happy News Year!

Deported Immigrant Rights Leader Jean Montrevil Sues U.S. Government

HeadlineJan 17, 2020

Deported immigrant rights leader Jean Montrevil has sued the U.S. government, arguing he was targeted for deportation because of his political speech in violation of his First Amendment rights. Montrevil is a founding member of the New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City, an immigrant rights group. He was deported to Haiti in 2018, after years of organizing. Meanwhile, a Salvadoran asylum seeker has sued the federal government and the private prison corporation CoreCivic over a miscarriage she suffered in January 2018 while detained at an immigration jail in Otay Mesa, California. ICE agents detained Rubia Morales in a cold cell and then denied her medical attention even though she pleaded for it. Days later she suffered a miscarriage.
