The vote to remove him, on charges of corruption, came two months after a failed impeachment in September on an unrelated accusation of obstruction of justice. Some lawmakers and protesters decried the vote as a political ploy ahead of elections in 2021 and said the political chaos could further hamper the response to the coronavirus pandemic, which has devastated Peru.
