Hi there,

This month, Democracy Now! marks 29 years of fearless independent journalism. Presidents have come, gone and come back again, but Democracy Now! remains, playing the same critical role in our democracy: shining a spotlight on corporate and government abuses of power and raising up the voices of scholars, advocates, scientists, activists, artists and ordinary people working for a more peaceful and just world. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today in honor of our 29th anniversary. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Gov. Abbott Refuses to Convene Legislative Session on Gun Violence

HeadlineJun 02, 2022

In Austin, Texas, Governor Greg Abbott is resisting demands by state Democrats that he convene a special legislative session to tackle gun violence. Abbott called Wednesday instead for the formation of a special legislative committee. The Texas State Teachers Association blasted the move, writing in a statement, “Committees and other groups have studied school safety before … and schools obviously aren’t safe from mass shooters. This is because the governor and legislators refuse to address the real issue and enact reasonable gun laws to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.”
