South Korea Cracks Down on Resistance to Jeju Island Naval Base Project

HeadlineJul 19, 2011

Undercover police in South Korea have arrested three leading figures in a peaceful movement to oppose the construction of a strategic military base on one of the nation’s pristine islands. Popular resistance to the naval base on Jeju Island has been ongoing since plans for the project were announced five years ago. The project would lead to the construction of an expansive base which would be home to 20 warships and submarines and would serve as a strategic component in the U.S. military’s sea-based ballistic missile defense system.
