Iran has elected former nuclear negotiator Hassan Rouhani as the new president, replacing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Rouhani is considered a moderate compared to the other candidates. He took just over half the vote in a national turnout of 72 percent. Rouhani has called for greater engagement with Western countries, while urging respect for Iran’s right to nuclear energy.
