Hi there,

This month, Democracy Now! marks 29 years of fearless independent journalism. Presidents have come, gone and come back again, but Democracy Now! remains, playing the same critical role in our democracy: shining a spotlight on corporate and government abuses of power and raising up the voices of scholars, advocates, scientists, activists, artists and ordinary people working for a more peaceful and just world. If our journalism is important to you, please donate today in honor of our 29th anniversary. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Senate Republicans Vow to Reject Any Supreme Court Pick

HeadlineFeb 24, 2016

Senate Republicans have vowed not to hold even so much as a courtesy meeting with President Obama’s pick to replace Justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Republicans will wait until a new president is in place next January.

Sen. Mitch McConnell: “This is a unique circumstance, and you’d have to go back to 1888, when Grover Cleveland was president, to find the last time a vacancy created in a presidentially elected year was approved by a Senate of a different party.”
