En Irak, líderes árabes sunitas y kurdos rechazaron un intento de mantener el mandato del Primer Ministro Ibrahim al-Jaafari. El lunes, al-Jaafari recibió otro golpe, cuando la coalición chiíta liderada por el ex Primer Ministro Iyad Allawi también votó para rechazarlo. Los políticos iraquíes fueron presionados por el gobierno de Bush para remplazar a al-Jaafari por un nuevo Primer Ministro.
